Slug: (A label of one or two words identifying the story)

Example: brave widow

Author (Reporter) Your name, number, class

Dateline (Place of origin of the story) and Month, Date and year:
Example: August 14, 2020

Byline: Author’s Name that may be published in the newspaper

Headline/ strap: Try to summarise the story in headline. Use strap if needed.
Text of the story/feature: Not more than 400 words for news,
Not more than 700 words for feature.
Use infographics as per the demand of the story.

End with: Author’s initials/sub-editor’s initials/Teacher’s or mentor’s initials

Attachments
Photographs
With caption containing brief description of its contents, photographer’s credit line: Name, date

Reporter and sub-editor should check:
Lead of the news story should be limited to less than 25 to 30 words in a sentence. Lesser the better for the readers to get the gist of the event.
A paragraph should be limited to one to two sentences.
Split the text into smaller paragraphs if it is a one single big paragraph.
Avoid unnecessary words.
Avoid clauses.
Avoid passive voice.
Avoid difficult/uncommon words that ordinary readers may not understand.
Rewrite the paragraphs after eliminating unnecessary and wrong words and expressions.
Use ‘track changes’ feature under ‘Review’ of MS Word. Learn to use this feature if you have not used it.
Attribute the source of information and pictures/ videos you use in the story.
Use authentic sources/ websites for your information.
Use quotes wherever possible. Don’t change quotes. Paraphrase wherever necessary.
Follow the ‘Keep it Straight and Simple’ rule when you build the narrative.
Remember that stories/ features are not opinion pieces.
